Student Work
Movie Posters Project.
The culmination of a unit on character design and world building, 9th-10th grade drawing students created movie posters in charcoal featuring their original characters. Lessons in the unit focused on creating character silhouettes out of overlapping shapes, figure/ground relationships, and value gradation.
Character Turnarounds Project
Students created characters by overlapping random shapes, then developed their favorite characters by drawing them from multiple angles. These same characters returned in their movie poster project.
Foreground/Middleground/Background Practice
Students explored value and texture with india ink and bamboo brushes, cut shapes out of their inked pages, and created collages demonstrating foreground, middle ground, and background. This was practice in figure ground relationships for their Movie poster project.
Abstract Watercolor Paintings
10th-11th grade students explored the use of watercolor techniques and sharpie and posca markers to create abstract watercolor paintings.
Fantasy Maps
10-11th grade Painting students used aquarium gravel to draw organic landmass shapes and completed fantasy map paintings using watercolors and micron pens.
